Auburn- Robert E. Gilmore, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan 8, 2013 after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Gloria T (McGrath) Gilmore who passed away in 2008 and his son Gary who passed away in 1972. He leaves his 3 children, Carol Shoemaker and her husband Oliver of Sebring, Fla. Bruce Gilmore and his fiancee Paula Mulcahy of Jefferson and Brian and his wife Kathleen of Rochdale. He also leaves his 3 grandchildren, Erin Gilmore of Auburn, Joshua Gilmore of Rutland and Sean Gilmore of Rochdale and one great granddaughter, Riley Morgan. He leaves two brothers, Lester Gilmore of W. Yarmouth, and Ronald Gilmore of Gaffney, S.C Bob was born in Worcester, the son of Kenneth Gilmore and Florida Burbank Gilmore. He grew up in Millbury and lived in Auburn for over 60 years. Bob graduated from Millbury High School and Worcester Junior College; He proudly served with the US Army as a Sergeant in New Caledonia, the Phillipines and Japan during WW II. He received many awards during his service to his country including the bronze star. He retired from Wyman Gordon Co. after more than 40 years. He was a member of Saint Joseph’s Church in Auburn, Bob and his wife Gloria spent many rewarding years taking care of children through the foster care program. They were named foster parents of the year in 1986. This was truly their passion and they made a difference in the lives of many precious children. Bob cared for Gloria for 9 years along with Life Care Center of Auburn following her devastating illness and was a true inspiration and role model for his family. He will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank the staff at Homstead Hall for all of their care during in past few years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visiting hour from 9:30-10:30 Friday January 11, 2013 in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street., His funeral will be held from the funeral home with a Mass at 11AM in St. Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford Steet, Auburn. Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Millbury.
