Theresa F. (Kavanagh) Cooney, 88, of the Overlook Masonic Health Center, and former longtime resident of Barbara Avenue, Auburn, died peacefully on Sunday, January 13, 2013. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 50 years, George A. Cooney, who died in 2006; and beloved son George M. Cooney who died in 1984 in a mountain climbing accident. She leaves her three daughters, Ann T. Trombly and her husband Craig of Charlton; Catherine M. Vangos, of Charlton; Mary F. McCarthy and her husband Dennis of Nashua, New Hampshire; eight grandchildren: Neal and Kevan Trombly; Kaylen, William, and Daniel Vangos; Kyle, Samuel, and Patrick McCarthy. She also leaves sisters-in-law Paula and Patricia Cooney, brother-in-law John Cooney, and many nieces and nephews. She was also pre-deceased by her brother George M. Kavanagh, and sister Katherine E. Hansen. Theresa was born in Providence, RI, daughter of the late George A. Kavanagh and Katherine (Downes) Kavanagh and had lived in Auburn many years before moving to Charlton ten years ago. She graduated from Providence’s Classical High School, received her Bachelor’s degree in Education at Rhode Island College, and her Master’s degree in Education from Boston University. She began her career as a classroom teacher in the Providence Public Schools and held supervisory and administrative positions in the Danvers and Auburn Public Schools where she served as Director of Elementary Education. She retired in 1982 as Principal of Bryn Mawr School in Auburn. She had also been a ‘stay-at-home’ mother for eleven years when her children were young. She was a member of St. Ann’s Parish in North Oxford, a member of the Rhode Island College Alumni Association, the Boston University Alumni Association, the National Retired Teachers Association, and the Retired Educator’s Association of Massachusetts. The family wishes to thank the entire third floor Skilled Nursing staff for their exceptional compassion and care shown to Theresa during her four years at Overlook. They were not caregivers – they were friends who shared many happy moments and allowed her to end her life with great dignity and respect. We would also like to extend that same thanks to the members of Overlook Hospice Services, who helped bring peace and tranquility to both Theresa and her family during the final nine months of her life. Calling hours for family and friends of Theresa will be at the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St, Auburn on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A funeral Mass for Theresa will be celebrated on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Church, 654 Main Street, North Oxford. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Auburn.
